RIDMAT/MRC’s Naloxone and Overdose Prevention Education Program

Erin McDonough, BS, is the Medical Reserve Corps Coordinator

Drug overdose is the leading cause of accidental death for adults in Rhode Island, claiming multiple lives each week.

Opioid overdose, involving both prescription pain medications and illicit drugs, is an issue that impacts all RI residents, regardless of socio-economic status, race, age or gender.

Most overdose fatalities are preventable if bystanders and first responders have appropriate training and are prepared to respond in an effective manner.

This curriculum is designed to prepare individuals to recognize and respond to an overdose.

Hands-On Practice



At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

Identify risk factors for overdose.

Recognize and respond effectively to an overdose.

Give rescue breathing, through pocket mask, to an individual who is unconscious and not breathing effectively.

Administer intranasal (IN) naloxone and Intramuscular Naloxone to an individual thought to be experiencing an overdose.

Understand how the Good Samaritan Overdose Prevention Act (RIGL 21-28.8) applies to lay responders and the individual experiencing an overdose.

Understand statewide efforts aimed at curbing morbidity and mortality

 Kevin Perry recently joined Joseph Merritt & Company, a family business, that has been in operation since 1908. Prior to Joseph Merritt, Kevin Perry spent his time internationally working for software and technology companies in Asia, specifically Japan running sales, marketing and operations.
