DESCRIPTION:Download the 2015 Poster Rules Packet Here.\n  \nGENERAL INFORMATION: The Drug Free Poster Art Contest was created almost 30 years ago as an art/ calendar contest to involve children\, from kindergarten through high school in a program that would promote living a drug free life. With the support of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and Rural Housing Services\, the scope of the competition has increased dramatically. The art/calendar contest is an activity that not only helps to ensure the health and well-being of our youth\, but it also goes a long way toward maintaining a positive public perception of your property and community. The project is sponsored by AHMAs throughout the country and NAHMA. \n\nAll Contestants submitting artwork MUST be a resident of a community that is currently a member of NEAHMA.\nWhile we encourage community activities to discuss the theme and contest rules\, ENTRIES MUST BE CREATED BY THE INDIVIDUAL WITHOUT ASSISTANCE.\nThe five grade categories for CHILDREN are based on the grade level the contestants have completed by June 2015:\n\n-Kindergarten – 1st Grade    – 7th Grade – 9th Grade \n– 2nd Grade – 3rd Grade       -10th Grade— 12th Grade \n-4th Grade – 6th Grade \n\nELDERLY participants are residents 55 and over who live in a NEAHMA community. DISABLED participants are\nresidents of any age who live in a NEAHMA community. DESCRIPTION:  \nPresented by: Caren Silverlieb \n  \nREGISTER NOW \nAccording to the Alzheimer’s Association’s 2013 Facts and Figures report\, the percent of people with Alzheimer’s disease based on age range estimates that one in nine (11%) over age 65\, and about one in three (32%) of those 85 and older have the disease. People with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias already live in the buildings in which we work\, they will continue to age with us in community\, and their dementia will continue to progress. The goal of the Habilitation training is to enable residents with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia to remain in (low income subsidized and market rate) independent senior housing (even if only a few months) happier and better understood through staff training\, and a specialized memory support team. \nThe following topics will be covered during the training: \n• What is Alzheimer’s disease?\n• What is happening in the brain?\n• What are normal age-related changes vs. Alzheimer’s disease?\n• What are the components of the Habilitation Model?\n• What are best practices in communication with the resident?\n• How does the physical environment effect mood?\n• What is meaningful engagement?\n• How does the resident use behavior to communicate? \nCaren Silverlieb\, MMHS\, received her Master’s Degree in the Management of Human Services with a concentration in Aging from the Heller Graduate School at Brandeis University. Over the last 28 years\, Caren has held a number of executive management positions in government funded\, non-profit and private community-based long term care programs\, affordable housing\, and assisted living. She serves on the advisory and resident relations committees of the Newton Community Development Foundation\, the education and training committee of the Massachusetts Assisted Living Facilities Association\, the education committee of LeadingAge national\, and the board of trustees of LeadingAge Massachusetts.
